With their album Punk in Drublic, NOFX truly hit their stride. The quartet didn't change their approach at all -- at their core, they remain a heavy, speed-addled, hook-conscious post-hardcore punk group -- but their songwriting has improved, as has their attack.

Far too many to count, and besides, no one seems to want to label music any more. Even in the early '90s, barely 15 years into its life, the definition of punk had been broadened and warped in surprising directions—punk could mean naive pop, heavy metal in the charts, or even doing something yourself, whatever that might be.

There's a lot of sugar and light in there, but you can't deny the songs are mighty catchy. During the L.A. Punk explosion, this band rebounded between power pop, bouyant surf, and street edge. punk, and home Rock styles. But no one was prepared for this explosive blender of an album; thrash, ska, lounge and that was in just one song.

Little-known or forgotten delights include The Jags, The Only Ones, The Rezillos, The Skids and The Rich Kids. The No. 1 Punk Album is rich in variety, musical styles and themes, and I recommend it to lovers of innovative rock. I just don't think it deserves its title with the omission of the aforement punk /5(7).
